BALAKNAMA - THE STORY OF THE CHILDREN'S NEWS PAPER

BALAKNAMA - THE STORY OF THE CHILDREN'S NEWS PAPER

Have you ever heard of Balaknama? Today lets we talk about it-

1. 'Balaknama', or 'Children's Voice', is a quarterly publication which is written and run completely by the children living in slums of New Delhi, INDIA. With the readers of thousands of people, the newspaper is considered one of the world's most influential papers. Balakanama, supported by the Indian non-profit organization CHETNA, contributes contributions from a federation of Indian children who work for survival and stay away from the road. It started with only 35 child-contributors, but the stories come from various Indian states like Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and Andhra Pradesh.

2. The paper written in Hindi covers many serious topics which highlight the problems of the children of Indian roads. A specific issue with articles related to topics such as police brutality, child marriage, and illegal child labor. It is not what you expect from children's newsletter, but Balaknama is known for reporting bitter truths and harsh realities.

3. There are several members of this group, 16-year-old Chandni print stories to collect and make decisions. Jyoti, 14, who worked as a garbage collector, is now a contributor.  16-year-old Shambhu, who wash cars during the day and works in a hotel during the night. Shanno, a 19-year-old who is the editor of the paper, learned to read under a tree in an open-air charitable school. He writes stories of people who can not read or write, but their voices are set to listen. Actually, Balaknama's Contributors are a Fire Band of Children, who want to sit in the world and keep them in mind and their plight.

4. Shambhu says that working for the newspaper is a dream come true. “So I thought, there are so many street children like me, one by one I will get their names published in the newspaper,” he explained. “Earlier, I was into drugs as well, but I got out. There are some kids like me who still take drugs and they aren’t able to get ahead in life.”

5. New Delhi alone has information of having more than 500,000 child laborers, many of whom live in horrific situations and abuse drugs and alcohol. At least 11 million children live in the hut all over the country, work on roads without education, and many of them are not officially recognized. Without food ration, books, health care or any other government aid, these children are often forced to work in terrible conditions to stay alive.

6. The employees of Balaknama reach such children and hold the first-hand account of their stories in the form of facts or poems. After making a decision about discussing these stories and the need to publish those stories, they organize a meeting. Child journalists are not paid, but they receive an allowance to cover travel and other expenses for the paper.

7. The non-profit organisation CHETNA takes care of the production costs of the paper and sells the last print at a nominal price of rupees 1. The proceeds from the sale are used to help improve the lifestyle of the children of the road.
